We made a quick jaunt down to Rincon, P.R. from Boston this past weekend to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. We flew into San Juan, had our ritual lunch at Mi Casita and then headed out to La8 Surf Shop. As usual Peter at La8 took really good care of us, i highly recommend checking out this shop if your in San Juan, even if you don’t surf you can pick up a pair of reefs, some board shorts, a rash guard or even some shades!
Next we were on our way down rt2 to Rincon, We made a sunset stop in Aguadilla to check out Surfers Beach, then back on the road to our final destination Hotel Villa Confresi. Nice hotel RIGHT on the beach, with a lively bar and pool.
Surfed some waist + waves at Marias and Domes. When we were done at Marias we picked up some artwork from a local artist IKE (pronounced e-kay) ike is usually posted up right at the entrance to marias where the road splits and you can continue down to domes or head up the hill.
We had a great lechon plate at el Fogon de la Curva, it’s a little ways outside rincon on rt115 in Anasco. Great food, great views and run by a very nice family…another highly recomended stop in the Rincon area
New for 2012 hyperflex has unveiled they’re a3 surf series. I recieved my 5/4/3 amp-3 wetsuit this week and a swell showed up with it!! Surfing in and around the Boston area in the winter can bring brutal conditions – cold water, colder air, wind etc.. so you’re winter gear is very important.
My initial take on the amp-3 wetsuit was that it was pleasing to the eye, stretchy neoprene, the thermal lining was very soft and good looking and at $290 for the 5/4/3 not too bad on the wallet considering the price of other wetsuits with similar options.
Now the actual performance of the suit. Getting into the suit wasn’t that bad considering it’s a front zip winter suit. The day i used it, it was overcast, air temperatures in the 40’s with strong gusting wind and the water temperature was about 45. actually a fairly warm January day. I surfed for about 2 hours, nice and warm in the suit, i feel that i could have surfed just as long in much colder temperatures. I felt very comfortable in the suit, not as restricted as i’ve felt in other winter suits. Even taking the suit off i didn’t need to contort as i usually do with my other suits and when i got the suit off is was pretty much dry on the inside.
Bottom line – I have no real complaints with this suit. no issues putting it on or taking it off and i was really comfortable in the suit. The build quality was very nice. This is an exceptional wetsuit especially with the $290 price tag (6/5/4 – $300). i would recomend it to anyone looking for a new winter suit, drop us a line if you’d like one of these!!
Got a couple of new boards in today from Natti Surfboards and Vec Surfboards. Some really nice shapes here in East Boston. All surfboards are custom made right here in New England and are some of the nicest you’ll find around. Feast your eyes upon these beauties!! (the chub is already sold – lasted about 12 hours in the shop – more on the way!!) The blue vec is a 7’6″ fcs thruster setup and the red natti is a 2+1 8’6″ wave catching machine!
So, i was out catching some fun little long period swell the other day at Winthrop beach. The sun was shining, barely any wind, no crowd – a good time for catching some waves with the sup. The birds were going after some school fish who were awfully close to the surface, seemed kinda early for the Bluefish to be in, but whatever. The harbormaster was cruising around all over the place while i was out, which is also unusual but again….whatever. On my way home i noticed news helicopters flying around the Winthrop beach area, and then my phones buzzes. Al who i’d been staring at the tiny waves rolling in waiting for the tide to back off a bit texts me “shark sighting in winthrop”. HA i though, nice one…a shark in winthrop. i got home and saw this. Guess that answers why the fish were jumping and why the harbormaster was cruising around

Took a trip today to see good friend Keith Natti at Twin Light Glassing co. Got to see some of the latest Stuff he was working on.
What i saw was a whole load of boards shaped by legendary shaper Bill Hamilton, some Vec boards and some of Keiths own boards. I felt like a kid in a candy store in this place, it’s like custom surfboard heaven. So hit us up if you want in on any of the goodness that’s going on right here in our backyard!
